Oxford barely needs an introduction. One of the most famous cities in the world, home to the oldest English-speaking university and consistently ranked among the most desirable places to live in the country, it attracts buyers from across the UK and internationally who want to be part of something genuinely extraordinary. The dreaming spires, the colleges, the rivers, the culture and the sheer density of brilliant people and institutions make Oxford unlike anywhere else in England.
We work with buyers across Oxford and the surrounding area regularly and it is one of those markets where having the right mortgage advice in place before you start looking makes a particularly significant difference.
The Oxford property market
Oxford is one of the most competitive property markets in the south of England outside London. Demand consistently outstrips supply, driven by the University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University, the John Radcliffe Hospital, a thriving technology and life sciences sector along the Oxford science corridor and a significant population of London professionals who have relocated for space and quality of life.
Properties across all price points move quickly in Oxford and buyers who are not financially prepared regularly lose out to those who are. Having your Agreement in Principle ready and your mortgage fully arranged before you begin viewing is not just sensible advice here, it is essential. In a market this competitive, being ready to move immediately is often the difference between getting the home you want and watching it go to someone else.
Getting around
Oxford is exceptionally well connected. Oxford station provides fast services to London Paddington in around an hour, with the Oxford Express coach service offering a frequent and often faster alternative into London Victoria. The city is well served by road via the A34 connecting to the M40 to the north and the M4 to the south, and a comprehensive local bus network makes it genuinely practical to live in Oxford without a car. Cycling infrastructure across the city is extensive and deeply embedded in the local culture in a way that few other UK cities can match.
The Turf Tavern
Oxford has no shortage of famous pubs but the Turf Tavern is our personal favourite and one we always recommend to anyone visiting or moving to the city. Tucked away down a narrow alley off Holywell Street and Bath Place, it is the kind of place you need to know about before you can find it, which is part of its charm. Dating back to 1381, it is one of Oxford's oldest pubs and has served everyone from students to heads of state over the centuries. The low ceilings, the historic atmosphere and the sense that generations of remarkable people have sat in the same seats before you makes it a genuinely special place for a drink. If you are new to Oxford or visiting before a move, find it. It is well worth the effort.
University, culture and everyday life
Beyond the University, Oxford has a cultural offer that most cities three times its size would struggle to match. The Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library, the Oxford Playhouse, the Covered Market and the Botanical Garden all sit within the city centre alongside a genuinely excellent range of restaurants, cafes and independent shops. The Westgate Shopping Centre provides a modern retail complement to the historic centre and the combination of old and new gives Oxford a vitality that never feels stale.
The city also has a significant technology and research economy built around the University's spinout companies, the NHS presence at the John Radcliffe and the Oxford science parks, which means the professional population is diverse, well paid and consistently in demand for housing.
Schools
Oxford has outstanding schools across both state and independent sectors, which is a significant driver of family demand. The combination of exceptional schooling, world class culture and strong employment makes it one of the most complete places to live in England for families who can afford to be here.
