The Henley Royal Regatta is the event that puts Henley on the map every summer and it is every bit as spectacular as its reputation suggests. But for those who want a deeper connection to Henley's rowing heritage, the Leander Club is something else entirely.

Founded in 1818, Leander is one of the oldest and most celebrated rowing clubs in the world. It has produced an extraordinary number of Olympic champions including Sir Steve Redgrave and James Cracknell and it continues to train elite athletes today. We are fortunate to be members of the Open Doors business network, which is based out of Leander, and if you ever have the opportunity to visit you should take it. Inside it is like being in a museum, with gold medals, memorabilia and a history that is genuinely humbling. It is one of those places that reminds you how special Henley actually is.

Where we go in Henley

A walk along the river is one of our favourite things to do on a quiet afternoon and Henley delivers on that front better than almost anywhere in the Thames Valley. The high street is vibrant and well stocked with independent shops, restaurants and cafes that give it a genuinely upmarket feel without being unwelcoming.

For food and drink, the Angel on the Bridge is the obvious choice the moment you cross Henley Bridge and it earns its reputation. Our personal favourite for lunch though is The Little Angel, which is slightly off the main riverside drag but all the better for it. Quieter, consistently good and well worth knowing about.

We also have the pleasure of working with Warren Kerley from Tank2Create, whose team are based in an office at the Old River Museum in Henley. Once or twice a month we enjoy an unofficial business breakfast at the Catherine Wheel at around 7am, which is one of those early morning rituals that sets the day up properly.

Getting around

Henley has its own train station with services to Twyford, where passengers can connect onto fast trains into London Paddington and the Elizabeth line. The town is also well connected by road to Reading, Oxford and the M4. For those commuting to London or working across the Thames Valley, Henley offers a genuinely beautiful base without being as remote as its rural feel might suggest.

Henley has a strong selection of schools and a well-established community feel that makes it particularly popular with families. The combination of outstanding natural surroundings, a lively town centre and excellent connectivity means it consistently attracts buyers who could live almost anywhere and choose Henley.
