Didcot is one of those towns that tends to get underestimated by people who have not spent much time there. It sits in the heart of Oxfordshire surrounded by beautiful countryside and farmland, well connected by rail to London, Reading, Oxford and beyond, and quietly growing into one of the more practical and affordable places to live in the region.
We receive a steady flow of enquiries from Didcot and the surrounding area, drawn largely by buyers who have done the sums and realised how much further their money goes here compared to Oxford or Reading while still enjoying excellent transport links into both. We even looked at properties around the Boundary Park development ourselves before we ultimately settled on Woodley, so it is an area we considered seriously rather than just one we serve professionally.
An unlikely piece of Formula One history
Before we get into the practical stuff, here is something worth knowing about Didcot that surprises most people. In 1977, Sir Frank Williams founded the Williams Grand Prix Engineering team in a former carpet warehouse on Station Road in Didcot. One of the most successful Formula One constructors in the history of the sport began in an unassuming building in a small Oxfordshire town. For any motorsport fans considering a move to the area, that is a genuinely brilliant piece of local history.
The Great Western Railway Museum
Didcot Railway Centre is one of the area's most well-known attractions and a genuine destination for anyone with an interest in railway history. The centre houses a remarkable collection of Great Western Railway locomotives and rolling stock and hosts a regular programme of events and steam days throughout the year. It is the kind of local attraction that gives a town real character and it is particularly well loved by families with young children.
Getting around
Didcot Parkway station is the headline act and it earns its reputation. Fast services to London Paddington take around 45 minutes, making Didcot a viable commuter option for London workers who want significantly more space and value than the capital can offer. Services also run regularly to Reading, Oxford and across to Swindon and Bristol, giving residents genuinely excellent rail connectivity in multiple directions. The A34 provides fast road access to Oxford to the north and the M4 at Newbury to the south, completing a transport picture that is stronger than many people expect for a town of this size.
Surrounding area
One of Didcot's genuine strengths is its position within the broader Oxfordshire landscape. Wallingford is just a short drive away and well worth exploring for its market town charm and riverside setting. Abingdon is similarly close and offers a good range of independent shops and amenities. Oxford itself is easily accessible by train or road and provides everything you could need in terms of shopping, culture and dining. Didcot sits at the centre of a genuinely beautiful part of England, surrounded by farmland and countryside that gives it a spacious, unhurried feel despite its excellent connectivity.
The property market
Didcot offers some of the best value for money in Oxfordshire, particularly for buyers who are priced out of Oxford or who are relocating from London and looking to maximise what their budget can achieve. New developments including around the Boundary Park area have brought modern housing stock to the market alongside the more established residential streets, giving buyers a good range of options. Demand has been supported by the area's growing reputation as a practical and affordable base within the Oxford and Thames Valley employment corridor.
